หลังจากออก Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials (Windows SBS 2011 Essentials) เวอร์ชัน RTM และออกลูกค้าแบบ Volume License เป็นเวลา 3 เดือน ไมโครซอฟท์ก็ได้ทำการประกาศเพิ่มช่องทางการวางขายระบบปฏิบัติการ Windows SBS 2011 Essentials อีกจำนวน 2 ช่องทางได้แก่ การวางขายผ่านร้านค้าปลีก ( Retail Store) และการวางขาย OEM ที่เป็นหุ้นส่วนทางธุรกิจกับไมโครซอฟท์ โดยลูกค้าทั่วไปสามารถซื้อ Windows SBS 2011 Essentials ผ่านทางช่องทางใหม่นี้ได้ตั้งแต่วันที่ 7 กรกฎาคม 2554 เป็นต้นไป
Windows SBS 2011 Essentials เป็น 1 ใน 2 รุ่นของระบบปฏิบัติการในตระกูล Windows Small Business Server (SBS) ซึ่งเป็นระบบปฏิบัติการสำหรับผู้ใช้กลุ่มธุรกิจในครอบครัวและองค์กรขนาดเล็กจนถึงขนาดกลางที่มีจำนวนผู้ใช้ไม่เกิน 25 คน โดย Windows SBS 2011 Essentials จะมีคุณสมบัติพื้นฐานที่จำเป็นต่อการใช้งานในระบบเครือข่ายขนาดเล็ก เช่น การแชร์ข้อมูล (File sharing), การแบ็คอัพเซิร์ฟเวอร์ (Server Backup) การแบ็คอัพไคลเอ็นต์ (PC Backup), เว็บไซต์ (IIS) เป็นต้น จุดเด่นของรุ่น Windows SBS 2011 Essentials คือ การคิดไลเซนส์แบบ Server License Only ซึ่งคิดเฉพาะไลเซนส์ของตัวเซิร์ฟเวอร์จึงไม่ต้องเสียค่าใช้งานตามจำนวนผู้ใช้ (CALs) และเนื่องจากระบบมีการทำงานที่ไม่ซับซ้อนบริษัทจึงไม่จำเป็นต้องจ้างเจ้าหน้าที่ไอทีสำหรับจัดการระบบ
สำหรับผู้ใช้ในกลุ่มธุรกิจขนาดเล็กจนถึงขนาดกลางที่มีผู้ใช้มากกว่า 25 คนแต่ไม่เกิน 75 คน สามารถเลือกใช้ Windows SBS 2011 Standard ซึ่งนอกจากมีคุณสมบัติทั้งหมดที่มีอยู่ใน Windows SBS 2011 Essentials แล้วยังมีคุณสมบัติเว็บโฮตส์ติ้ง (Website hosting) และอีเมล์ (Exchange email) เพิ่มขึ้นมาด้วย โดยรุ่น Standard นี้จะคิดไลเซนส์แบบ Server + CALs นั้นคือคิดค่าไลเซน์ทั้งของตัวเซิร์ฟเวอร์และตามจำนวนผู้ใช้ และเนื่องจากระบบมีการทำงานที่ซับซ้อนมากขึ้นจึงต้องการเจ้าหน้าที่ที่มีความรู้เกี่ยวกับระบบคอมพิวเตอร์มากขึ้นสำหรับจัดการระบบ
ทั้งนี้ ในกรณีที่ต้องการใช้งานคุณสมบัติขั้นสูงอย่างเช่น SQL Server 2008 R2 for Small Business , Virtualization with Hyper-V หรือ Remote Desktop Services ยังสามารถซื้อ Windows Small Business Server 2011 Premium Add-on มาใช้งานเพิ่มได้อีกด้วย
อนึ่ง ไมโครซอฟท์ได้ออก Windows SBS 2011 Standard และ Windows SBS 2011 Essentials สำหรับลูกค้าแบบ Volume License ไปตั้งแต่วันที่1 มกราคม 254 และ วันที่ 4 เมษายน 2554 ที่ผ่านมาตามลำดัล โดยสามารถดาวน์โหลด Windows SBS 2011 Essentials จากเว็บไซต์ Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC)
